Famous novelist, Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay wrote a wonderful novel ‘Aronyok’ which was based on the people of hills and forests of the state of Bihar in India. I was highly moved by one of the many unforgettable characters of the novel. The name of the character was Jugalprasad who was socio - economically not from the higher stratum of the society but he has captured a permanent place in my mind. I will never be able to forget Jugalprasad in my lifetime. Jugalprasad was a common man who used to plant saplings, reap seeds, put fertiliser, water trees and so on. It was like nurturing a child carefully. The writer was attracted and curious and came to know that Jugalprasad was alone in this world having no kith and kin. The writer asked him why did he go on planting trees roaming around. He replied nicely – “trees will grow up one day and people will sit under their shadows to cool themselves. That day I will not be around. But I can imagine their comfort. This thought gives me pleasure.” Every time I go through ‘Aranyok’, I wonder how Jugalprasad can be termed as …. was he a nature-crazy, or a nature lover…? Today the world is in the need of more and more, millions of Jugalprasad who will love and take care of nature, who will nurture the nature around, who will make the world green and clean. The atmosphere will be pure to breathe for mankind forever. The people all over the world and the ensuing generations will be thankful and grateful to today's Jugalprasad for giving them the opportunity to live in a clear, pure, harmless and beautiful world. The immortal line of famous Bengali poet Sukanta Bhattacharya – ‘I will make this world liveable for this newborn’ - will be significantly meaningful.
Fraudulence - the word sounds little but it is like that snake-shaped multi-headed demon of Greek mythology who would never perish - even if you cut its head, another head will come into being and replace the old one. The name of that ferocious snake was Hydra. One of its many heads was unperishable and eternal. In Indian mythology also we find a demon, a drop of blood from its body would create thousands of demons at once. These are ever-ending symbols that cannot be destroyed. Now fradulence means cheating by any means. More we have achieved advancement with the help of science and in course of time, more and more incidents of fradulence have been taking place. Cheating in many aspects has become highly innovative. The human mind has been devoid of ethics and values. Ignorance, greed, helplessness have been the weak points of victims of cheating more often than not. Nobody bothers to think of the conditions of those victims. They suffer for the rest of their life. They cannot stand up independently to live their livelihood. Some of them even commit suicide. The fraud or the cheat does not bother to think of the pathetic condition of the family of that deceived and dead person. They face ruins socially and financially. So fraudulence is a demon that affects mankind immensely worldwide. We cannot get rid of them unless we love each other and raise to the occasion of helping others. To cheat the entire hard-earned money of someone will then be beyond one's intention. Love will be the bonding among the citizens of the Earth and this bonding will refrain everyone from doing any harm to others or cheating anybody mercilessly. To make someone suffer will bring sufferings for him also. This is the rule of the Mother Earth. She will not allow the cheat to stay happily. We should understand this truth. No exploiter, oppressive king or ruler could stay happy all along. Ultimately they also suffer till their death. We have witnessed the final consequence of these imposters or oppressors. So to get rid of these sufferings the only solution is to love everyone and to consider other’s pain as their own. When we will feel this from the core of our hearts, we will feel the importance and effectivity of ‘TPWP’.
The time we have been passing through, the socio- economic conditions we have been living in, the rat race we have been taking part in, has made every household to suffer from - 'mental torture’. This can not be seen, this can not be proved through post-mortem and this cannot leave any sign on bodies. But this mental torture can lead someone to death gradually. Losing mental balance the victim can even think of committing suicide. Anybody at any time may be the victim of mental torture in families, in localities, in educational institutions or at working places. Along with these, there is also the ‘social media’ which is the latest area of mental torture where a continuous dissection of characters has been going on. More often than not this remains unnoticed and instantly unrealised. Such is the finer application of such a torture. Goebles, the favourite ‘Army Officer’ of Hitler once said - “Utterance of lies for hundred times turns them into true.” Goebles may not be the best of persons, but this statement bears a truth in it. If a person is accused of any mischief continuously by many, a time will come when the person will start thinking that there might be some truth in it. In our childhood we came across a story where four people had planned to take the goat what a Brahmin was carrying with while passing through a road. They alternately and at different points of the road asked the Brahmin why he had been carrying a dog .The Brahmin, facing the same questions several times, decided that it was a dog and not a goat he was carrying in his arms. He threw away the goat making the plan of the wicked people successful. Mental torture is such as to make one believe that, what he has been accused of is true. Added with this is limitless ambition and consumerism. The desire to enjoy and possess all consumer and luxury articles drives many to untoward states of being. Some of them survive. Others do not. They succumb to unbearable pressure of non-fulfilment. Students in many cases face this mental pressure and unfortunately by their parents and close persons. Parents want to see their children successful in conventional sense and they want to see them number one in the society. But it can not be so always. The present socio-economic scenario compels parents to think in that way and they create pressure of fulfilment on their children. This cruel and inhuman expectation has become a deep-rooted social disease. We have to think in a new frame of mind. ‘Success’ is a relative term, its parameters are also relative. Achieving success in so-called financial parameter is not the ultimate bliss of life. Everyone has the right to live peacefully on his or her own terms. We cannot torture anybody out of fun or dislike for him only. I would hate to be tortured and I would not hate anyone or torture. It should be my duty to look after that no one is mentally tortured in front of me. Awareness, and not the fear of punishment, is the only solution to remove this social disease through the ‘TPWP’.
