The economy is the key indicator of a country's growth and success. When income declines, unemployment increases, recession works, then comes the role of economic planning to direct the country towards the right path. Actually, economic policy is not merely an academic theory or information confined inside a book. It is always dynamic and lively. Unfortunately, the basic needs of people are ignored in the economic policies of most of the countries. It is not emphasized as it is so in the matters of military or defence. Instead of allotting money for defence if the budget on health, education, agriculture, small and medium industries is sufficient, then the economy of the developing or underdeveloped countries gets strengthened. We all know that the industrial infrastructure of a country is the index of growth of that country. Is it not then essential to spend on defence? is it not then the question of insecurity that comes for a less powerful country that has the risk of being attacked by the powerful one? The answer is an empathetic ‘no’. Here comes my idea of such an economic policy that emphasizes on economic independence. Once it is achieved, there would not be any warfare or encroachment, no country would then prefer to spend in the defence sector either. It is not at all eutopia, it is my conviction and belief. I am aware that it is not wise to live in one’s own believed world is not wise.
Generally, there are micro and macro economics. I have thought over a third variety- ‘Gratitude Economy or Happy Economy’. This economy begets absolute happiness if it is implemented properly and universally. It is very much possible to implement all over the world. Being in any part of the great world, we must realise that whatever we have received or achieved is given by Mother Earth, we take everything from her. We do not have anything of our own. Mother Earth is the sole owner of all the wealth and resources of the world. We frequently say that we are born with bare hands and will depart bare-handed. This is absolutely true. We have not brought any property from any other planet. Neither we have created any wealth of our own. The element of fire, which signifies our civilization, is also procured by men from the Earth. We declare our achievement of using fire innumerable times, but we do not remember the contribution of the Earth in supplying the elements for that. The owner of all earthly wealth is Mother Earth. We take everything for granted and never do we pay any respect for the love and affection of our parents towards us during our entire lives. We never feel concerned about the hurdles our parents have to undergo to satisfy our needs. Our parents should also have taught us the significance and contribution of Mother Earth. Without Mother Earth, we do not have separate entities. We are born on the land of this world. When their children make them proud of their success, parents should gratefully thank Mother Earth without whom everything would have become impossible.
Very often we discuss about our roots and our search for it. But we are absolutely indifferent about our oldest root. This Indifference is self-destructive. Mother Earth has given away all her wealth to us. We have to take care of what we enjoy. We have to keep our surroundings clean. A complete plan for the beautification of nature has to be taken and implemented in large scale by the governments. Small individual programs cannot serve the purpose totally. Planting trees as the green initiative is the first step. Thousands of trees are to be planted to keep our ambience pollution-free and clear. Man can survive some time without food and even water but not without oxygen. Water is life- they say. But water sometimes causes the death of lives also when there is flood or any other natural disaster. Trees, on the other hand, supply life-saving oxygen ceaselessly. Unfortunately, we destroy not only trees but also ourselves through deforestation. Here comes the relevance of my ‘Doctrine of Gratitude Economy’.
We know that there are many people who are millionaires and no luxury is beyond reach for these rich people. They invest for their business to grow. But if they feel that their financial security is assured only by the Earth, then they can spend a few portions of their money for the beautification of the Earth, out of gratitude and not out of profit motive. This is the key of the Gratitude Economy. If this ‘Doctrine’ is followed in districts, states, nationwide or internationally, then the present in equilibrium in the world economy will be diminished and economic development will take place all around. Income will be generated for the poor through employment generation and the foundation of nations will be strengthened.
If one has the inclination, he can achieve the success of any kind. A major role in his success is played by the Mother Earth. If he realises this truth, he will be aware of his duty to invest for the sake of love and gratitude for Mother Earth. Money one earns is protected only when Mother Earth is protected and secured. If nature is pure, oxygen is ample, then life expands, diseases can be removed and the children of the next generation will be provided with a beautiful pollution-free world to live in.
We have spoiled our own nature. To fulfil our desire, we have invited danger by doing harm to nature and by indulging in pollution. If we spend for the betterment of this world, that will be the best way of doing our duty and showing our gratitude. This Gratitude Theory or Happy Theory may hopefully be included in the educational curriculum worldwide.
This ‘Gratitude Economy or Happy Economy’ may be termed as full dividend economy also. Whatever be the name, the idea and its execution are far more important and definitely the need of the hour. After all - as William Shakespeare said - What’s in a name? Even if we call a rose by any other name, it would smell always sweet. It is true for my proposed economy also. Call it by any name, it will work as an invisible garland of so many colourful flowers in the form of the citizens of the Earth.
