Here I will speak a bit about my life since the idea we are discussing in this book came to me from the various incidents in my life. The situations I faced made me realize things.
In the year 1999, I had planted more than thousands of plants in my house of Natshal. I used to nurture them. Why I had so much affection for the plants, I had no idea.
My love for plants might have been inspired by Sri Jagadish Chandra Bose.
Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, the inventor of Crescograph, after his research of 30 years, discovered that like humans and other animals, plants too are living beings. Plants too can grow, react, breathe and feel like us.
One night after Dr. Bose returned home, suddenly he decided to visit the garden.
At one moment, a tree bowed its branch towards him and again came back to the previous position. Dr. Bose could not believe his eyes. There was no storm, no rainfall. In fact, no animals were there in the tree. So how was this possible, he kept on wondering! He was trying to figure out the fact that why that particular tree had bent its branch towards him, whereas the rest of the trees didn’t. He stood still for some time. Then he came inside the house and asked the gardener that whether he has watered all the plants or not.
At first, the gardener was hesitating to say but later he confessed that he had watered all the plants except one since there was no water remaining in the container. He did not bring water from the pool; instead, he decided to water it tomorrow. But, the gardener was not able to understand what has happened. Dr. Bose asked him to show him the tree. The gardener pointed at the particular tree. Then Dr. Bose told him the entire incident that happened in the garden. After knowing everything the gardener was spellbound and taken aback.
In my own way, I can feel that plants possess life. They are in many ways useful to us. If they do not exist, it will be hard for us to survive. So it is our initial duty to save plants and to nurture and protect our nature. From my early childhood, I was very attached to nature and greens. When I planted those plants, I was so happy.
Poet Birendra Chattopadhyay has written somewhere that –
Instead of writing poems for the last 30 years, if he could ever plant a seed… What a delightful thought indeed!
I am neither a scientist nor a poet. I am a very ordinary soul. I have done jobs in higher ranks when I was working in the shipping industry and in the hotel industry; I have acquired the ability to speak a few languages. This wasn’t living life. As a human, I want to work hard and wish to lead an honest life because I believe that honesty is the right option. Sometimes I also make mistakes and get influenced by the wrong things of our surroundings but, at the end of the day I accept my mistake and I don’t hesitate to rectify myself. I have learned a lot from my experience during these years.
However, while serving Mother Earth, I learned to look at life much differently. I evolved.
I could feel that the realisation of loving Mother Earth was gradually making me transparent.
I wanted to put forward my thoughts, though I am not a philosopher. I have no big thoughts. I have perceived Mother Earth in a different way and I want to share it with all. I love nature and greenery. Whenever I used to return to my native home, before I entered the house, I would be keen to go and see my garden where my other family, (plants) was resting. At night, I used to go with a torch to meet them.
It was my initial duty to find out - how they are keeping these days?
I could hear them saying –
‘Michael, where were you for so many days? Don’t you know that we feel lonely without you’?
They shared a lot of things with me. I could feel them and understand them through their vibes.
People used to have problems with this habit of mine. They thought that after returning home from a foreign land after so many years, I should be visiting my relatives instead of being with plants. But, I used to ignore them because I knew the ultimate truth.
That is - Trees are seniors to all and it is our primary duty to respect them first.
Therefore, I used to bow before them just as I do to greet my family. The news of my arrival was the only gift they wanted. They don’t make demands like humans.
All they need is my presence, to be happy.
I have shared this story with you not to project myself as great but to project the greatness of plants. I am nothing without them.
They give life to me. They give life to the world. They are the ancestors of every living being.
