chapter - 11

Today is 15th August, Independence Day of India. From the morning lots of colourful programmes will be held in the school. Usually, Mohidhar does not want to attend these types of programmes. The reason is that he very consciously avoids meetings, organizations, noise, commotion, meaningless laughter, defamation, and criticism. Actually, he is always preoccupied with the thought that all these joyful programmes, all these gatherings & meetings, the efforts and arrangements which are done with the Earth as the base, will not have any value if the Earth becomes unsuitable for habitation! Thinking about all these, he starts walking towards the school as Head sir Sambit has specially requested him to be present in the Independence Day programme. As a reason, he has stated that all the members of the managing committee will be present in the programme and they want all the teaching and non-teaching staff should attend the Independences Day celebration. Though this type of instructions is not at all valuable to Mohidhar, he likes Sambit very much and cannot evade his request.
Speeches by a number of persons were over one after another and then the Teacher-In-Charge announced Mohidhar's name. Mohidhar felt embarrassed, as he could not utter customary, hackneyed words. So it might create problems and Sambit would have to deal with that. With these thoughts, Mohidhar stood up. He started to say, "Today is Independence Day, a day of great happiness. Throughout the country Independence Day is celebrated with joyousness. It is an occasion of jubilation and we are enjoying it. But at the same time, I am pondering over the matter that why in the whole year this one day is celebrated with such importance! In the other times of the year is this independent mentality reflected in our manners, behaviour and activities? Can we always express our personal opinions fluently without hesitation? We have broken this huge Earth into pieces and being ecstatic said - see, this is our independent country. I am a citizen of this independent country; we have divided the soil of the Earth into small pieces with barbed wire fencings and walls. We are independent on the side, how strange it is! We often tell about the gifts or kindness of our heavenly Father. But do we actually remember the kindness and generosity of the heavenly Father or Creator?
When our Creator, out of generosity has gifted this enormous Earth to us, has he allotted one piece of land for each person - saying that this man will stay here and the other one will go there? Could He think that human beings will create a passport, visa and so many other complexities to travel from one end of His dear Earth to the other? Whereas, the other creatures are not separated by a division of countries and discrimination! The migratory birds fly to another country crossing thousands of kilometers to save themselves from a terrible cold. They never forget the flyway; neither do they need any address. When the right time comes, they go back to the country from where they came. Can't we realize even after observing the actions of the birds, what our Creator wants? He sends his message in this way; whenever men are in danger; then men belonging to different religions pray to the Creator in different languages. But He never comes to us directly; He saves us from danger sometimes with the help of other men. We often say greed causes sin, sin causes death, but we never think for once that we enjoy our affluence having a strong foothold in the Earth and yet our extreme greed to plunder and exploit the wealth of the Earth has made us stand on the edge of the precipice!  Mother Earth is becoming completely destitute; she cannot carry the living world anymore. But the only cause of the destruction of the living world is the creature called Man. Other creatures are not responsible at all. This is a sin, a great sin; this sin will eradicate all of us."
Mohidhar stopped and looked around. Everyone was looking at him mesmerized. He started again, "To be saved from this self - destruction first of all we have to find out men with conscience and consideration. How can we find such a man? We have to find such a man on the basis of his behaviour and actions in different situations. That means when a man is in a poor and helpless condition, he has a certain kind of behaviour and activities. When his social status is changed in every aspect like money, influence, honour, reputation, if there is no change in his manners and actions then it should be accepted that the man has conscience and consideration. That kind of man will understand that at this moment only an endeavour is needed in order to save mankind.  Well, I have spoken a lot about the Earth - can anyone tell me in two words what is the Earth?
Seeing everyone silent Mohidhar said The Earth was a 'Gifted Land' to us. We have received the Earth as an unconditional gift. Yet there is an untold condition and that is we have the responsibility to love and take care in a disciplined manner. Some of us belong to one religion and some to the other. According to the tradition of each religion, some of us pray to 'Ishwar', some to 'Allah' some to 'God' etc. We urge Him to save us from adversity; we pray so that we can lead our lives happily with our families. But still, we cannot be totally happy. Why not? Because each of us tries to confine the Almighty Creator within our own circle of religion! We never realize that His glory is scattered all around the sky, air, mountains, rivers, forests, of his dearest creation 'Earth'
One, who is content with a little, stays happy. But wanting more and more has become our custom. All-devouring greed has made human beings extremely unhappy. So no religion can keep man contented. Actually, happiness is not external; it is a feeling of the heart. I shall finish my speech after stating something else. I want the new generation or your students to give me something and that is patience. In absence of patience, a persistent stubborn mentality is possessing today's materialistic world. Everyone is getting preoccupied with the thought - why shouldn't I get what I want?  These demands and the despair for failing to obtain that are making the younger generation terribly impatient. As a result, the success which could have come in their lives is not accompanying them because all of us know that ultimate success can be achieved due to extreme patience. So I request all of you to be a little patient, and then however unfavourable the situation may be, all hindrances will go away and success will definitely come your way."
After finishing his speech, he wiped away the sweat from his forehead and sat down on the chair. There was pin-drop silence for a few moments. Then Sambit stood up from his chair and started to clap and all the others present also gave him a big round of applause.
