Chapter - 6

From the morning Mohidhar could not concentrate on his work. He had to stop writing in the diary repeatedly. A little farther from his house, in a local field, a meeting held by a political party had been going on since morning. He was astounded to hear the speech of a spokesman through the amplifier. That speaker was saying that only their 'Party' could show the path of actual equality on the Earth. Hearing this Mohidhar became unmindful. Questions kept on arising in his mind one after another. He started to think - who is the real leveller? Is it possible for any man to show an equal mentality and to do impartial behaviour to everyone? Man himself belongs to some so-called class like rich or poor, educated or uneducated - whatever it may be. While thinking about all this Mohidhar realized that only the Earth behaves uniformly with every creature. It may be a very tiny creature or the greatest creature, man - her behaviour towards them never varies. All the treasures, all the beauty of the Earth are dedicated to all the creatures of the Earth. There is no partiality for anyone. So our Mother Earth is the true leveller and our proper guide to the path of equality.
Engrossed in these thoughts Mohidhar suddenly heard a lot of noise and shouts of many people from the street beside his house. He did not know what the commotion was all about, and he was not at all interested to know. He was annoyed to think that even after closing the doors and windows of his chamber of worship; he could not concentrate on his work. Once he thought he would ask Dharitri about it. But the next moment he rejected the idea as Dharitri was so unpredictable that he was not sure what answer she would give. She was very hot-tempered, always ready to flare up. As he was thinking so, someone banged the door forcefully - once, twice, and thrice. Mohidhar opened the door in a hurry and Dharitri forced her way in. she did not give any chance to the surprised Mohidhar to talk and said, "Come outside quickly, they are waiting for you." Mohidhar looked at her in amazement for a few seconds and said, "I have to go out! Why? Who is waiting for me?" Dharitri was furious but calmed herself and said in a harsh voice, "You have to go because the people of our locality are facing a problem, so they have come to you. Have you understood? Let's go."Dharitri did not give Mohidhar any chance to talk and holding his hand led him outside the room.
Mohidhar found quite a number of people standing in the front yard of his house. He seemed to know some of their faces, but what was their problem? He could not fathom why they had come to him and how would he solve their problem. Helplessly he looked at Dharitri first and then at the group of people. Realizing his condition Dharitri said, "Besides our locality, there is this concrete road made by the Government Authorities and adjacent to it are the boundary walls of many houses and a number of shops. There has been no problem so far, but suddenly Government has sent a notice that due to the adjoining walls, the concrete road has become narrow. As a result traffic jams and accidents occur frequently. So the authorities have decided to broaden the road, and so the walls and constructions on the Government land will be demolished." Saying all these words Dharitri stopped. Mohidhar said hesitantly, "I understand everything, but what should be done by me is not clear -'' Dharitri did not let him finish and declared "An answer letter should be sent to the Government immediately after being signed by everyone and with the information that if suddenly the boundary walls are demolished, then the houses and shops of many people will be damaged. It must not happen. You should appoint a good lawyer of the High Court today only through your contacts. A stay order must be obtained." As soon as she finished Rajib said, "Sir please, you have to do it; otherwise we shall be in dire straits. Don't worry about the money. All of us shall bear the expenses of the Court."
Everyone supported him. Removing his spectacles with his hands Mohidhar said in a calm voice, "First of all, not only in the High Court, I don't know any contact person or advocate in any of the Courts. Secondly, this is the most important fact that the boundary walls built beside the concrete road made by the Government - are occupying the land belonging to the Government. It is no one's personal property, so no one can build a concrete construction on the Government occupied land and this is also absolutely true that compared to the road the number of vehicles and the people has increased greatly. As a result, the road has become narrow, and traffic jam and accidents have become daily occurrences. The road must be widened. You see, with the help of laws and courts a Government initiation may be obstructed temporarily, but not forever. And our sons, daughters, relatives, and friends travel by the road everyday - if something happens to them? There is another side to it also. A large number of heavy vehicles ply through this road every day. Due to that, the walls adjacent to the road may crack and collapseat any moment leading to great danger. Have you ever thought about all these? I think that for the interest of all of us, for a greater interest this decision of the Government should be accepted and complied with. The rest is your discretion." Saying So Mohidhar walked slowly to enter his 'chamber of worship' and closed the door.
Dharitri and the neighbours gathered in the front yard stood dumbfounded.
