Chapter - 4

Sambit could not decide whether he would laugh or cry hearing Mohidhar's strange request. He looked at Mohidhar dumb founded for some time and then said, "Well, Mohidhar, is your health alright? I mean have you slept properly at night?"– Mohidhar did not let Sambit finish his words and started to laugh through his white beard and mustache. Then he said in a funny note, "Actually you want to know if I am insane if my brain is functioning properly, isn't it?" Saying this Mohidhar started to laugh loudly. Sambit felt a little ashamed as he did not expect that Mohidhar would expose the question which was hidden in his mind. Now he smiled a little and said, "Oh, no, Mohidhar, I didn't say so. Actually, you gave me a proposal, and it was beyond my expectation that such a proposal could ever come to me.
Mohidhar said, "Why not? In ancient times in India, the preceptors and mentors thought that sitting in the lap of nature, keeping nature as witness the students could be enriched with the education which would give them the primary training of loving nature and loving Mother Earth. And we need to go so far, our very own and most admired Rabindranath Tagore whose writings, whose activities inspire us every day, every moment - he also established 'Shantiniketan' in the midst of quiet nature, far away from the concrete jungle of the city. His aim was to teach the future generation to love nature and the Earth along with becoming educated. They should learn to take care and nourish nature and the Earth even as they use the vast treasure of nature.
That's why the poet wrote,

'Give me back my forest
    Take hold of the city'.

Have you ever thought about how agitated he was when he said this? I want that too; I want to teach the little children to love the Earth at first. I want to make them understand that even if they learn a lot, all of their education and knowledge will be in vain if they don't obtain the basic wisdom that the Earth is the Mother of all of us. If our Mother Earth is not well, healthy and beautiful; then our huge amount of wisdom, intelligence, education, talent, genius and beauty — everything will be futile.
We shall live only if the Earth lives; but where shall we go, whom shall we show these if the entire Earth is uninhabitable? Well, tell me who are the devourers and destroyers of the Earth?" Sambit stared at Mohidhar for some time and said, "You have made the ultimate question — of course, we, the human beings are the ones. Not only is that humans are inventing new tricks everyday to snatch all the treasures of Mother Earth."
"You are absolutely right, Mohidhar said thumping the table. While giving something to their children, parents advise them to use and enjoy those, but not to misuse and bring misfortune on themselves. We understand these words very well and follow them. But why? Is it because if their son or daughter does not look after the wealth properly or fails to take care of the parents, then the parents may deprive their child of wealth? Whereas can one plunder the wealth of the Earth in a heartless and cruel manner only because the Earth cannot speak or protest? Often Mother Earth sends severe natural calamities as messages to show her anger. But why don't we understand that warning in spite of being the most intelligent creatures? We should act according to her wish and keep the Earth beautiful as our primary responsibility.
I want to make them understand these words, but that won't be possible inside the classroom surrounded by four walls. When they will sit under the open sky, in the shadow of the trees and the cool breeze will soothe their mind and body; then only these words will be meaningful to them, their minds will be in turmoil caused by numerous questions. They will find out a new direction in their life. My only duty is to show them a new direction. Only for those reasons, I want to do my classes in the open field. Please give me permission."
Lifting up the falling spectacles on his nose Sambit said, "Sometimes I get confused whether you are a teacher of geography or Bengali Literature. Anyway, I just want to say that last time I had tremendous trouble managing the pressure of the Managing Committee. No less was the pressure from the guardians also. But I continuously fought with them, tried to convince them again and again that whatever you are saying are not the ravings of an insane person. Your realisation, your consciousnesses are working like an inevitable hyphen between the existence and non-existence of this planet, our dearest Earth." Sambit stopped a little to breathe and getting a chance Mohidhar said, "You have thought so much regarding this subject! I am so happy to think that an educated, sensitive person like you has given so much importance to my proposal. Please join me and let's start to convince people together." Sambit was listening to Mohidhar's words attentively. Now raising two hands he said, "No, Sir, my wife's name is not Dharitri. "Looking at Sambit, surprised Mohidhar said, "What do you mean?"
"Joining you means wishing to take the classes of the children under a tree, or beside the pond, and then the Managing Committee will drive me away from my job. You can imagine what will happen next at home!" Saying this Sambit started to laugh loudly and Mohidhar joined him. Sambit rang the bell kept on the table, Milan peeped through the door. Sambit said, "Bring two cups of hot tea for us." Milan shook his head and went away. Looking at Sambit, Mohidhar said, "So you are giving me permission, isn't it?"
