The condition of Mr. Sambit Sen, the Teacher-In-Charge of Dharanidhar High School was quite miserable on that day. After coming to the school he did not sit on his chair yet. He was continually walking up and down and stopping only to take a sip of water from his glass. A letter from the members of the school Managing Committee was responsible for his present condition.
The letter consisted of serious complaints against Geography teacher Mr. Mohidhar Sen like he was absent for a long time without stating any reason and he was teaching the same bizarre theories made up by himself to the students. The letter further informed that the guardians of the students were very annoyed hearing about the above from their children.
Mohidhar's behaviour became an impediment to the school's esteem. As the Teacher-In-Charge of the School, Mr. Sambit should have informed the Managing Committee about the actuality. Now he should immediately call Mohidhar and solve the problem. Otherwise, The Managing Committee would give him a show-cause notice. As Sambit Sen was about to ring the calling bell, the peon Milan entered in a hurry and without giving him a chance to enquire, announced "Sir, Mr. Mohidhar is coming." "Has he actually entered the school or is sitting under a tree now?"
"No Sir, he is coming to you."
"All right, you stay outside; I'll call you whenever needed."
During this conversation, Mohidhar entered the room and sat on a chair. Mr. Milan caretaker of the school gave a look at Sambit Sen and left. Sambit sat on a chair opposite Mohidhar and facing Mohidhar he said, "What is the matter with you? Do you want me to lose my job because of you?"
Mohidhar stared silently at Sambit Sen for a long time through his thick lenses and said, "Again that selfish thought —I for myself. Well, you are Sambit, which means you have wisdom in you, but I think you are also selfish. Now think the opposite word."
"What do you mean?" Astonished Sambit asked him.
"I mean the opposite word is unselfish or altruistic - one who thinks only for the benefit of others."
"You have started all these again? Why don't you understand that these are creating all the troubles?"
"And why don't you understand that if we don't start immediately, there will be tremendous chaos which will be impossible to control.
Sambit got very irritated and asked, "What chaos?. How will it originate?"
"The problem is that if from this moment onwards we do not start the work of preservation of all the wealth of the Earth-like rivers, mountains, forests etc. if we cannot put an end to the dangerous tendency of greedy human beings to plunder and destroy the treasures of our Mother Earth; then the progress of the human civilization which is our greatest pride, will soon be obliterated.
So far Sambit was listening to Mohidhar silently with concentration. Now he sighed and said, "when I hear people criticize you from different corners I feel very awkward and get very angry with you; but when you are in front of me, I listen to you; he paused and said, "Then I feel the urge to love you and admire you. This is very mysterious."
While Sambit was talking Mohidhar was rotating the Globe kept on the table and watching it attentively. Now he looked at Sambit and said in a humorous tone, "Really mysterious! We are born on the Earth as human beings, stay for the allotted time and then leave the Earth; the whole process is bewildering, isn't it?"
"How?" asked Sambit.
"I mean though there are so many creatures on the Earth, you and I are born as the best of the lot - human beings. This is the first mystery.
We are not born here as per our own will, but someone else’s will. He is our Creator. How does the birth happen? Through a man and a woman by some specific process! The Creator has such an amazing assessment - he arranges for a safe and secure shelter like the mother's womb. Then the birth takes place and then growing up. At last, death comes as an invincible diktat of time. That means being born on the Earth and perish on the Earth too. Isn't it a strange and mysterious journey? But we spend the period between our arrival and departure being busy with our selfish goals, our own benefits and engaging in strife with others. We never think that our omnipotent Creator who has sent us to such a place - where everything is provided for our happiness, comfort and enjoyment, has himself given us instructions to maintain the natural equilibrium of the Earth and to protect the natural wealth properly. But we have never shown any interest or inclination towards this matter; neither have we tried to be conscious. So the Creator often gets tremendously angry with us and as a result calamities like major earthquakes, powerful tsunamis, epidemics or violent and deadly storms occur any time anywhere on the Earth.
The result is the death of thousands of men, women, children, old persons without any discrimination and the complete demolition of the massive monuments which stand as the pride of human civilization. Not only the magnificent mansions decorated with all the necessities of human living, luxury, but enjoyment are also totally devastated, the various places of worship of different religions made by men fall prey to extreme catastrophe. What does it prove?" Astonished Sambit asked, "What can it prove?"
"It is proved that our Creator earnestly wants that human beings should discover Him within the boundless and immeasurably splendid natural wealth. They should enjoy and at the same time should properly protect the treasures of nature. It is totally against the Almighty's will that His infinite glory should be confined within a closed chamber made by men. And all these dangerous calamities are the expressions of this extreme disapproval. We never for once contemplate that we are suffering due to the crimes and misdeeds done by our forefathers. Again, whatever evil acts we are performing and the way we are engrossed in the game of destroying the Earth - will result in dreadful repercussions for our future generations.
As we are born on the Earth as human beings, lots of signals, indications and directions of our Creator towards us remain hidden in the process. I think that these signs and directions are extremely silent and mysterious. The mystery will be solved only when we shall understand the Creator's intention, shall be able to show respect to his wish and realize that all our material growth will be in vain if we cannot keep our Mother Earth beautiful and pure, if we cannot preserve our natural wealth abstaining from savouring and destroying it thoughtlessly."
Mohidhar stopped and as he was panting, a mesmerised Sambit continued to stare at him.
